Glass Ionomer Dental Cement; A review of its current status.
J Pak Dent Assoc Jan ;11(2):95-100.

This paper reviews the current standing and future prospects for Glass ionomer dental cement (GIC). These materials are of two chemical types; the older, self-hardening cements, which set by an acid-base neutralization reaction to give a relatively frail material; and the newer resin modified cements, which set partly by polymerisation and partly by neutralization. Compared with self-hardening cements, the latter material has improved aesthetics, improved resistance to moisture, and greater toughness. Both types of GIC release clinically significant amounts of fluoride and are used in a variety of applications. These materials have a promising future in restorative dentistry. CONCLUSION: GICs both conventional and command/light cure set, are important materials for modern clinical dentistry and will remain in dental clinics for the years to come.
