J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;12(5):297-301.

Objective: To find out the proportion of postmenopausal women in Pakistan who were predisposed to the development of osteoporosis so that steps could be taken for its prevention. Design: A Pospective Study. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted in 1997-1998 at Gynaecology unit, PGMI, Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar. Patients and Methods: One thousand postmenopausal women of more than 45 years of age were studied. These women included outpatient and admitted patients of gynaecology unit. Patients attendants were also included. The study was based on a proforma called Score sheet. Score stands for simple calculated osteoporosis risk estimation. It comprised of six parameters, each being given its points. If the total score was more than 6, the patient was considered predisposed to osteoporosis. If the score was less than 6, the patient was safe. Results: A significant large proportion of postmenopausal women 75.3% were predisposed to osteoporosis. Risk increased with age (96.8% in women of 75-84 years of age compared to 55% in women of 45-54 years of age). Weight had a protective role (i.e fracture rate was 24% in women with body weight between 81-100 lbs compared to 2.87% in obese women with body weight between 161-180 pounds) Conclusion: Majority of postmenopausal population in Pakistan was predisposed to osteoporosis. Prevention in the form of estrogen replacement therapy (HRT) is the best option at present.
