Antimicrobial Resistance in Mycobacteria: A Survey in Peshawar Region.
J Rawal Med Coll Jan ;2(1-2):6-10.

Drug resistant tuberculosis, poses a great health risk to individual patients, as well as to community at large. Therefore to find out the incidence of drug resistance amongst Mycobacteria in this region, a twenty year survey was conducted. The majority of the isolates were of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The resistance to anti-tuberculous drugs was low, 25.8% of the isolates were sensitive to all the primary anti-tuberculous drugs i.e. Streptomycin, Isoniazid, rifampicin and ethambutol; and only a very small percentage were resistant to all the drugs. The resistance to individual drugs was also very low. The most effective drug was ethambutol. Under these circumstances, it is essential that these primary antituberculous drugs may be used cautiously and inadequate dosages, so as to prevent the development of high incidence of multidrug resistance tuberculosis.
