Pak J Surg Jan ;31(3):196-9.

Objectives: To determine the correlation between bone mineral density and nutritional deprivation in elderly patients with osteoporotic hip fractures. Also evaluate the incidence of lymphocytopenia and immune dysfunction in malnourished osteoporotic patients. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Sett ing and Duration: Orthopaedics department, Liaquat National Hospital, Karachi from January to June 2015. Methodology: 50 patients with osteoporotic hip fractures were included in the study aft er meeting the criteria. All patients underwent Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry that refl ected the severity of osteoporosis. Venous blood samples were taken to check serum Albumin, transferrin and vitamin D3 levels that showed the nutritional status of the patient. Also total lymphocyte count was calculated from blood picture in order to predict immune dysfunctions and susceptibility to infections. Results: 72% of patients with osteoporotic hip fractures suffered from low albumin levels and low lymphocyte counts however there was no significant correlation between osteoporosis and malnutrition (P=0.423). Conclusion: There is no significant correlation between the severity of osteoporosis and the level of malnutrition present in elderly patients with hip fractures.
