Complications of Renal Transplantation - Preliminary Results.
J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;12(7):415-20.

Objective: To evaluate the complications of kidney transplantation. Design: A department-based descriptive study. Place and Duration of Study: It was carried out over a period of 3 years (October 1998 - September 2001) at the Department of Urology and Renal Transplantation, Lahore General Hospital, Lahore. Patients and Methods: A study on 51 cases of renal transplant was carried out to analyze the incidence, onset and pattern of complications in the patients. The data collected during hospital admission and follow up was analyzed and compared with the findings reported in the literature. Results: The commonest medical complication was systemic infection (58.8 %) followed by rejection. Amongst medical complications, rejection occurred in 35.2% of cases while 25.4% patients suffered surgical complications. Conclusion: Recipients of kidney transplantation are susceptible to immunological and infectious complications. Surgical complications don`t differ from other studies but hyperacute rejection is still a problem. Mortality and morbidity can be decreased by meticulous pre-operative evaluation, preparation and selection of donors as well as recipients. Management of co-morbid illnesses due to end-stage renal disease also influences the graft and patient survival.
