Frequency of preterm delivery in patients of bacterial vaginosis treated with clindamycin.

Introduction: Bacterial vaginosis, the most common lower genital tract disorder associated with preterm premature rupture of membrane, preterm delivery. Treatment with clindamycin prevents preterm delivery. Objective: To determine the frequency of preterm delivery in patients of bacterial vaginosis treated with clindamycin Methodology: Case series study conducted from 18th July 2012 to 17th January 2013 in the out – patient department of obstetrics and gynecology at Lady Duff erin Hospital Karachi. Subjects were selected based on Schmidt and Hansen diagnostic criteria, and were excluded due to any other co – morbid. Patients were treated with clindamycin 300mg orally twice daily for 7 days. Outcome was measured at the end of labor. Th e data was analyzed using SPSS version 19. Results: Th e frequency of preterm deliveries was 20 (10%) cases. Of patients of 30 years, 14 (12.7%) had preterm delivery (p-0.17); of patients of para 2, 18 (11.3%) had preterm delivery (p-0.19); Of patients of low socioeconomic status, 15 (11.7%) had preterm delivery (p-0.46) and illiterate patients, 16 (18.8%) had preterm delivery (p-0.005). Conclusions: It is concluded from this study that frequency of preterm delivery was 10.5%.
