A study of the various aspects of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in a tertiary care hospital.

Objective: Th e aim was to evaluate the results of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in symptomatic gall stone disease in terms of complications, hospital stay and mortality in a tertiary care hospital. Design: Prospective descriptive study. Sett ing and duration: Surgical “D” ward, Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar from January 2012 to December 2012. Methodology: Patients aged 16 years and older who were admitt ed for symptomatic gall stones were included. Patients with gall bladder mass, porcelain gall bladder, empyema gall bladder, medical or surgical jaundice, unfi t for anesthesia, surgery and those with common bile duct pathology such as stones or dilatation (>10mm) were excluded. Patient data were entered on a specially designed proforma containing patient demographics and outcomes under the inclusion and exclusion criteria and later analyzed. Results: A total of 124 patients were analyzed during the study period. Of these 20(15.8%) were males and 104(84.2%) females. Mean age of the patients was 36.92±11.25 years. Th e mean operating time was 56.62±13.53 minutes. Complications encountered during the study included; conversion to open cholecystectomy 5(2%), port site bleeding 4(1.6%) among them epigastric 3(1.2%) and umbilical 1(0.4%), port site infection 7(2.8%) among them epigastric 2(0.8%), umbilical 5(2%), post-operative sub-phrenic abscess 4(1.6%) and minor biliary leak 7(2.8%) respectively. Mean hospital stay was 3.33±1.22 days. Th ere were no cases of umbilical port site hernia, bile duct or colonic injury. No mortality was observed in our study. Conclusion: Th e present study shows that the results of laparoscopic cholecystectomy carried in our unit in terms of safety are within acceptable limits.
