Bilateraiity in Retinal vein occlusions.
Pak J Ophthalmol Jan ;12(1):19-21.

We evaluated 211 patients with retinal vein occlusion between January, 1992 and January, 1995 in the Ophthalmology Department of Dokuz Eylul Medical Faculty and further assessed bilateral cases. There were 16 Cases (7.6%) of bilateral retinal vein occlusion. Six cases had bilateral central retinal vein occlusion, six, bilateral branch retinal vein occlusion, and one, bilateral hemispheric retinal vein occlusion. Three patients had hemispheric retinal vein occlusion in one eye and branch retinal vein occlusion in the second. Nine of 16 patients 156%1 were male and seven (44%) female. All but one patient with bilateral branch retinal vein occlusion were over 50 years of age. in five cases (31%) no predisposing factor could be elucidated. Out of 32 eyes of 16 patients, 24 eyes had ischemic form of the disease. In 14 of 32 eyes initial visual acuity was under 201200. In the light of our study, we believe that bilaterality in retinal vein occlusion is quite notable and bilateral cases must be dealt with using utmost caution.
