Glucose 6 Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) Levels In Apparently Healthy Newborn Infants.
J Rawal Med Coll Jan ;1(2):65-7.

Glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is a vitally important enzyme, especially in its protective role against the injurious action of oxidants on red cell membrane. The reference range of this enzyme amongst newborn infants has been reported in a study from Lahore. In the present study, we have evaluated the levels of G6PD activity amongst apparently healthy newborn babies (age one to five days) of Rawalpindi and Islamabad area, using commercially available kits (Randox). The G6PD levels in fifty cases thus studied ranged from 4.5 to 18.2 U/G Hb, with a mean of 8.45 ± 2.18 U/G Hb. These levels are comparable with previous studies, and can be used as a reference for newborn infants in our setup.
