Effect of obesity on outcome after coronary artery bypass grafting surgery in an Asian population.
J Cardiovascular Dis Jan ;11(4):93-6.

BACKGROUND:Obesity is rising at a rapid pace in the developing countries due mainly to changes in lifestyle. Among other preoperative parameters, extremely high body mass index (BMI) predisposes to substantial health risks for postoperative complications after cardiac surgery but it remains controversial. So we evaluate the effect of obesity on outcome after coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective observational study was conducted at Outdoor Department of Quaid-e-Azam Medical College/Bahawal Victoria Hospital Bahawalpur from 1st March 2013 to 31st December 2014. Two hundred consecutive patients aged range 35-65 years who had undergone surgery for coronary artery disease were included in the study. All the data was collected on first follow up session after surgery by using patient’s data base and was analyzed by using SPSS Version 20. P-value ≤ 0.05 was taken as significant. RESULTS: Total number of patients included were 200, 106(53%) patients were obese while 94(47%) were non-obese. Mean age was 50.14±13.04 years. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia were found to be common co morbid conditions. Postoperative renal failure (8.5%)and re-exploration (3.8%) were found to be higher in obese patients. Mean postoperative hospital stay was 9.4± 0.14 days. CONCLUSION:CABG in patients with obesity is associated with greater post-operative morbidity.
