Bacterial Organisms Causing Urinary Tract Infection in Pediatric Patients Presenting at Tertiary Care Hospital, Karachi.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of bacterial organisms causing urinary tract infection in the pediatric patients presenting at a tertiary care hospital of Karachi. Method: A prospective, cross-sectional study has been conducted at the Ziauddin Hospital, Karachi, from July 2015 to December 2015. Patients, who met the criteria for the diagnosis of urinary tract infection were included and confirmed by the culture. Results: The target population was recruited on meeting the inclusion criteria of the study that provided us with the sample size of 174. The study group included 40.8% of the males and 59.2% of females. The mean age has been estimated to be 5.78 ± 2.1 years and the average length of stay in hospital of 3.26 ± 1.12 days. The most common microorganisms identified with the urinary tract infections has been Escherichia Coli. The main presenting clinical features included the fever, dysuria, vomiting, flank pain, urinary urgency, incontinence, altered urinary color/smell, restlessness and urethral discharge. Patients who presented with non-specific symptoms were suspected to have urinary tract infection because of the abnormalities found on urinalysis. Conclusion: The prevalence of organism causing urinary tract infection is comparable to other settings in the study region and the most common pathogen are gram negative bacilli.
