Acute Bacterial conjunctivitis in Southern Punjab.

From January 1998 to June 1999, an 18-month prospective study of 275 cases was carried out to assess the incidence of various organisms causing acute bacterial conjunctivitis in patients presenting in the Eye Department of Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Bahawalpur. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most frequent causative organism, present in 98 cases (35.6%) of acute bacterial conjunctivitis, followed by Staphylococcus aureus, found in 43 cases (15.6%). Streptococcus pneumoniae in 11 cases (4%) and Haemophilus influenzae, Proteus, Klebsiella and Enterococcus species were found in some cases. in this study the maximum number of cases (34.18%) occurred in the months of October, November and December.
