Enzyme Immuno Assay (EIA) specific to Herpes Simplex in Women of Child Bearing Age.

Present study was carried out to screen women of child bearing age for herpes simplex virus in our population by Enzyme Immuno Assay (EIA). A total of 180 women of child bearing age comprising of abortion and normal reproductive performance groups were tested for immunoglobulins M and G against herpes simplex virus by EIA. Out of 180 cases, 11 (5.6%) were found seropositive for IgM and 33 (18.3%) for IgG. In women with history of abortion out of 92 cases, 8 (8.7%) were seropositive for IgM and 23 (25.0%) for IgG. In women with normal reproductive performance out of 88 cases tested, 3 (3.4%) were seropositive for IgM and 10 (11.4%) for IgG on decrease with increase in age. It can be safely concluded from present study that their are sizeable reproductive losses due to herpes simplex viral infection. Regular screening of women during pregnancy is advisable to overcome fatal outcome of herpes simplex virus.
