The use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in postmenopausal women is said to decrease coronary risk by having beneficial effects on lipid profile. This comparative study aimed at investigating the effects of HRT on lipid profile in our population. Eighty postmenopausal women were divided into four groups of twenty each Hormone users were divided into two groups according to the type of menopause, natural or surgical and thus the type of hormone therapy taken, i.e. oestrogen only or oestrogen and progestin combined therapy. They were compared with the appropriate group of hormone non-users, who were again divided into two groups, depending on the type of menopause, natural or surgical. For each group, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, TC/ HDLC ratio and LDL/ HDL cholesterol ratio were estimated. Statistical analysis of the values obtained for these parameters showed that the intergroup differences observed were highly significant with P values being < 0.001. Thus our results indicated beneficial effects of HRT on the lipid related risk factors of coronary heart disease.
