Hysterosalpingography – A Cost Effective Technique in the Evaluation of Infertility.
Ann Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;8(1):23-6.

Objective: To find out the role of Hysterosalpingography (HSG) as first stage investigation for infertility. Study Design: Observational analytical study Place and Duration: It was conducted at Robina Mubashar Hospital Mirpur, Azad Kashmir and District Headquarter Hospital (DHQ) Mirpur, Azad Kashmir from Jan 2009 - Aug 2010 (over a period of 20 months). Materials and Methods: In the study a total of 50 infertile patients were selected for Hysterosalpingography. Results: Out of 50 selected patients for HSG 54% (n = 27) were less than 30 years of age, while 46% (n= 23) were 32 - 40 years of age. 76% (n = 38) patients presented with primary infertility, while only 24% (n=12) were of secondary infertility. Duration of infertility was an important parameter which showed 52% (n=26) of patients having infertility of more than five years (> 5 Years), while 34% (n = 17) having infertility of 3-5 years and only 14% (n=7) presented with less than three years (< 3 years). Most remarkable result shown by our study was that the free spillage of dye indicating tubal patency was seen in 94% (n=47) of patients, while tubal blockage was seen in only 6% (n=3) of patients out of which 4% (n=2) with bilateral blockage and 2% (n=1) unilateral blockage. Conclusion: HSG is a highly specific investigation for tubal patency, reducing the need for diagnostic laparoscopy in patients with patent tubes showing it cost effectiveness.
