Prevalence of Gingivitis in Patients Visiting Islamic International Dental Hospital.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of gingivitis in patients visiting Islamic International Dental Hospital. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Place and Duration: Islamic International Dental Hospital from August 2011 to November 2011 Materials and Methods: All adult patients of either gender who had all permanent teeth erupted were included in the study. It was carried out on 125 patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria and visited Islamic International Dental Hospital from August 2011 to November 2011. The age range of patients of this study was 15 to 72 years. Periodontal Disease Index (PDI) developed by Siguard P Ramjford was used to assess prevalence of gingivitis. A questionnaire was designed and two house officers were trained and calibrated on PDI and filling the data form. Six indexed teeth were assessed for PDI and score was calculated. The data were entered in computer and analysis was done using SPSS version 17. Data analysis included descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution percentage and cross tabulation. The level of significance was set at 5%. Results: Results showed that 69% of patients suffered from gingivitis. Conclusion: According to this study the prevalence of gingivitis was found very high. Emphasis on oral hygiene instructions should be given and patients should be educated about awareness of gingivitis.
