Impact of mode of trauma on the outcome of moderate head injuries.

A prospective study of 100 consecutive patients who presented with moderate head injury was carried out. The mode of trauma, Glasgow coma score on admission, type of lesion and duration of stay were studied. 62 patients were involved in road traffic accidents, 19 had falls, 12 were assaulted, and 7 had firearm injuries. 87 were m ales and 13 were females. Age ranged from 2 to 75 years. Five patients died, 75 patients made good recovery, 7 had severe to moderate disability while 13 though had no physical disability had maladjustment problems in their jobs. Mechanism of trauma was found to be a major factor affecting the clinical course, mortality and morbidity. Patients involved in road traffic accidents had relatively poorer outcome.
