J Pak Assoc Derma Jan ;10(1):2-5.

The material of this report is derived from patients of syphilis seen at PNS Shifa Hospital Karachi from Jan 1996 to Dec 1998. In all patients with a clinical suspicion of primary syphillis diagnosis was confirmed by dark ground microscopy. In patients with clinical suspicion of secondary syphilis or an unexplained rash VDRL was carried out. All patients were subjected to complete dermatological, general and systemic examination. Results: Patients were found to have different type of lesions: papules, nodules, plaques, macules, oral ulcers, condylomata lata, corymbose lesions and anetoderma. Lymph nodes were involved in all patients. Most of the patients had lesions in a generalized symmetrical distribution involving trunt, limbs and face. All patients were HIV negative. Conclusion: Syphilis is not an uncommon disease in Pakistan. A high level of suspicion is essential to make an early diagnosis.
