Knowledge, Attitude and Practices Regarding Household Waste Management Among Residents of Rural Peshawar, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: In developing countries, he management of waste has become a problem because environmental laws are not well implemented. The unhygienic disposal of waste is an important public health issue in Pakistan. OBJECTIVE: To know the Knowledge, Attitude And Practices Regarding Household Waste Management Among Residents Of Rural Peshawar, Pakistan MATERIALS & METHODS: A descriptive cross sectional study design was used. Convenient sampling technique was employed to recruit 100 respondents. Data were collected through structured questionnaires between August 2014 and February 2015 at Nahaqi community District Peshawar. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and frequencies and percentages were calculated. RESULTS: A great number of the respondents (42%) had inadequate knowledge regarding house hold waste management. Majority of the respondents (69%) were not using garbage bins for storing the house hold waste where as 70% of the respondents were throwing garbage in open air spaces. Most of the respondents had positive attitude towards household waste management however, 32% of the respondents replied that they had no role in minimizing the house hold waste. CONCLUSION: Findings of this study revealed that there was improper practice of waste management. This study showed that the knowledge, attitude and practice of people in rural areas of Peshawar were not appropriate, hence it is necessary to embark on the development of long-term waste management awareness programs.
