Awareness during general anaesthesia.
J Cardiovascular Dis Jan ;9(1):31-4.

Introduction the possibility of conscious awareness oc curring in apparently anaesthetized patients is alarming to patients and anaesthetists alike. the overall incidence of awareness is reported to range from 0.5-2.0% for patients under a range of anaesthetic drugs for a variety of surgical procedures.1-9 the most common times are during induction, at the time of incision and at the time of emergence from anaesthesia. most data on what patients recall from surgery under general anaesthesia come from review of case reports rather than rigidly controlled trials. despite an increasing number of reports of awareness, there is no evidence of an actual increase in its incidence. the most likely explanation of this likely increase are greater public awareness of the phenomenon. awareness can be experienced during surgery for major trauma, cardiac and obstetric procedures, difficult tracheal intubation, very ill patients, morbidly obese patients, during bronchoscopy and other diagnostic procedures.
