Cutaneous Tuberculosis A study of ten cases.

10 cases of cutaneous tuberculosis were studied over a period of seven years. As the lesions do not produce symptoms patients do not seek medical advice for years. The result is that by the time the dermatologist see the cases the lesions have grown to a large size.

CASE REPORTS: 10 cases of cutaneous tuberculosis were studied during a period of five years at the Department of Dermatology Liaquat Na tional Post Graduate Medical Centre University of Karachi and Department of Dermatology, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro. Eight of these patients were females and two were males. The age range was between 6-45 years. In four cases the lesions were on the buttocks. After biopsy three were proved to be Lupus Vulgaris and one warty tuberculosis. One case had puckered scarring on the neck and one had discharging sinuses on front of right chest. Biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of scrofuloderma in these two cases. The seventh case had a atrophic plaque on left cheek, the eighth had a nodule on left ear lobe. Both the lesions proved to be of Lupus Vulgaris. The ninth case had verrucous lesions on the dorsum and sole of right foot.The tenth case had hy perkeratotic lesions on palm of left hand. On biopsy, diagnosis of warty tuberculosis was made in both the cases. There was no systemic involvement in any of the cases. The other investigations performed were Blood CP, ESR, X-ray chest. Acid fast bacilli were not found in skin lesions. Tuberculin test was done in each case. It was positive in Lupus Vulgaris only. X-ray chest revealed calcified hilar lymph nodes in the two cases of scrofuloderma. All the case responded to a full course of antituberculous therapy.
