Pediculosis Capitis: A common community problem.

There are three varieties of lice; head louse, body louse and pubic louse. Children particularly girls are usually affected, occipital region is the site of choice. Prevalence of pediculosis is increasing. Pediculosis causes many complications. Excoriations, Furunculosis, enlargement of lymph glands, eczema and typhus fever. Diagnosis is easy on visual examination. Common drugs for treatment are DDT application as 2-5% in emulsifying base, loraxane, soap containing 3% salicylic acid and 10% sulphur, 1% permethrin. Lindane shampoo. One hundred and ten patients of pediculosis were seen by the author at Aiwan-e-Tijarat Hospital, North Karachi and at his own clinic. Among them 15 were males and 95 females. The patients had complications like furunculosis, enlargement of lymph glands and eczema. Similar complications have been highlighted in different studies in the world. For treatment of pediculosis proper medication is necessary, personal hygiene plays an important role.
