Gomal J Med Sci Jan ;12(1):19-22.

Background: Nasal bone fractures are the commonest type of the bony facial injuries seen in emergency department because of the prominent position of the nose on facial skeleton. The objectives of the present study were to determine the etiology, clinical presentation and outcome of closed reduction in terms of persistent postoperative deviation in patients with simple nasal bone fractures. Material & Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Departments of ENT, Mardan Medical Complex, Mardan & MMM Teaching Hospital, D.I.Khan, Pakistan from July 2012 to Jun 2013. All patients with simple nasal bone fracture not associated with other facial bone fractures due to any cause and of any age and gender were included. All patients were treated by closed reduction. Data regarding age, gender, etiology, clinical presentation, complications and any persistent deviation postoperatively were recorded. Results: With total 120 patients, mean age of the patients was 28.5 + 14.59 range 2-60 years and male to female ratio was 3:1. The most frequent cause, symptom, sign and complication were road traffic accident (54.15%), epistaxis (70.80%), external nasal deformity (76.65%), and septal hematoma (20%). Persistent postoperative nasal deviation was encountered in (5.80%) patients. Conclusion: Road traffic accident is the most common cause of nasal trauma. Closed reduction for simple nasal bone fracture generally produces acceptable cosmetic results.
