Infection-Associated Haemophagocytosis: Intensity and Effect on Haematological Parameters.
J Rawal Med Coll Jan ;6(1):17-21.

Background: To study the intensity of haemophagocytosis (HPC) associated with infection and its effect on haematological parameters. Methods: Forty-six patients suffering from infection of varied aetiology (viral 19, tuberculosis 11, enteric fever 7, malaria 6, leishmaniasis 2 and brucellosis 1) were studied. Bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy was done in all cases. Bone marrow smears were examined for HPC. Complete blood counts, reticulocyte count and RBC morphology were also performed. Results: Most patients showed either moderate degree grade II (46.1%) or severe degree grade 111 (39%) of HPC. Patients with increased intensity of HPC also had a profound effect on haematological parameters, particularly haemoglobin levels and platelet count, resulting in the depression of these cell lines. Conclusions: Viral, bacterial and parasitic infections play an important role in histiocytic hyperplasia and HPC. Severe degree HPC has a profound effect on physical findings and haematological parameters of patients particularly on haemoglobin level and platelet counts.
