Pak Oral Dental J Jan ;36(4):586-9.

Variation in overbite was a common finding in patients with dental malocclusions and it is always difficult to correct. The aim of the present study was to find out the pattern of overbite in patients and its relationship with various categories of dental malocclusions. Sample of this study consisted of 120 pre-treatment dental casts (37 males and 83 females) of patients who came to the orthodontic department of a tertiary care hospital in 12 months. Dental casts were assessed for categorization of malocclusion according to incisor relationship into class I, Class II div 1, class II div 2 and class III. Overbite was measured form dental casts and overbite was classified into open bite (no overlap), normal over bite(0-2mm), moderate deep bite(3-4mm), severe deep bite(5-7mm) and extremedeep bite (>7mm).SPSS 21 was used for statistical analysis. Prevalence of open bite was 3.3%, normal overbite was 36.7%, moderate deep bite was 39.2%, severe deep bite was 16.7 % and extreme deep bite was 4.2 %. Overall deep bite was found in 60.1 % of the dental casts. Class II div 2 incisor relationship (46.7%) was the most prevalent type of malocclusion followed by class I (43.3%), Class II div 2 (7.5%) and class III (2.5%). There was statistically significant difference between values of overbite in class I, class II div 1, class II div 2 and class III malocclusions as p<0.005. Class II was most prevalent category of malocclusion and deep bite was mainly associated with class II div 1 malocclusion.
