Tobacco cessation approaches among dentists.

This study was carried out to evaluate use of tobacco cessation approaches among dental professional of Sindh, Pakistan. Tobacco smoking is the major cause of mortality among preventable death. In Pakistan prevalence of tobacco is accounted for 36% males and 9% females. Involvement of health care workers in implementing and planning efficient tobacco cessation approaches is necessary for increasing rates of abstinence in local population. Study was conducted in year 2015-2016, in four dental colleges of Sindh, Dow University, Isra University, Bhitai Medical and Dental College and Liaquat University of Health Sciences. It was a cross sectional descriptive study conducted among 300 participants. The study focuses on tobacco cessation approaches/advice used by dental professional in OPD of Sindh, by use of custom made questionnaire. This research is needed to identify factors that facilitate and inhibit dentists' capacities to deliver smoking cessation advice. To gather the information about attitudes and behavior of dental professionals towards tobacco cessation interventions and to calculate the count of dental Professionals using tobacco cessation approaches. Over the past few years very limited studies have been reported in Pakistan with respect to TCA among health care professionals. No significant study is reported with respect to tobacco cessation approaches among dental professionals of Sindh. Thus the present study focuses on behavior and attitude of dental professionals towards tobacco cessation in province of Sindh. Our results have demonstrated a certain gap between dentist and patients regarding tobacco cessation approaches and advices.
