Correlation of third molar agenesis with hypodontia in an orthodontic population.
Pak Oral Dental J Jan ;34(4):656-9.

This study was conducted to investigate the correlation of hypodontia in orthodontic patients with third molar agenesis and to compare them with patients without third molar agenesis. A sample of 270 patients between age group of 12-35 years was selected from the records of Orthodontic Department of Dental College, LMDC. Panoramic radiographs and dental casts were used to determine the frequency of hypodontia. The teeth that were found missing were maxillary lateral incisor (3.1%), followed by mandibular lateral incisors (2.6%), mandibular central incisors (1.8%) and mandibular second premolars (0.55%). The Pearson chi-square test was used to determine the correlation between third molar agenesis and agenesis of other teeth. A significant correlation was established between third molar agenesis and reduced number of other teeth statistically. (p<0.05).
