Pak Armed Forces Med J Jan ;52(1):29-31.

A Prospective study was carried out on one hundred admitted patients at CMH Lahore over the year 1999. The objective of the study was to analyse genitourinary tract infection as causative factor of idiopathic preterm labour, to determine the commonly occurring organism in our set up and to highlight the role of antibiotics in arresting the process. The selection criteria was pregnant women with single, normal fetus and gestational age between 28-36 weeks with no clinical evidence of genitourinary tract infection or any other medical disorder. Diagnosis of infection of genital tract was confirmed with the help of laboratory investigations. The microorganism most frequently detected was E.coli in urine cultures (27%) and ureaplasma urealyticum (31%) in vaginal specimens. Only 17% of total patients had negative cultures. Incidence of genitourinary tract infection in our study group with unexplained preterm labour was found to be 83%.
