Pak J Ophthalmol Jan ;18(4):95-7.

Epiretinal membrane reduce visual acuity, cause disconcerting metamorphopsia and pose considerable surgical challenge. We conducted a study of five patients who were operated on in the department of Ophthalmology, Civil Hospital Karachi. The patients who had epiretinal membrane in one eye with good vision in the fellow eye were selected for the study. Male to female ratio was 2:3. Preoperatively visual acuity of all patients was less than 6/60 with metamorphopsia. Three patients were aphakic while two were pseudophakic. Pars plana vitrectomy with epiretinal membrane peeling was carried out In all patients. Immediately after surgery, there was no visual improvement except improvement In metamorphopsia. Within two months, vision improved In all cases up to 6/60 only with correction. Intra-retinal haemorrhage occurred in all cases. A small break occurred at the periphery of macular area, which was sealed with diode endolaser. We conclude that in selected cases, visual symptoms can be improve after epiretinal membrane peeling.
