Effects Of Silicone Oil Removal.

Purpose: To study the outcome and complications silicone oil removal after pars planavitrectomy. Participants and methodology: The records of 86 patientswho had undergone silicone oil removal were studied with a follow up periodof fifteen months after silicone oil removal. Results: 16 eyes (43.2%) developed retinal re-detachment among those cases without scleral buckling and 5 eyes (10.2%) in those with scleral buckles.Among these 21 patients with re-detachment, 3(14.3%) presented with re-detachment at first postoperative day, 14(66.7%) eyes presented within four weeks postoperatively,2(9.5%) eyes presented within 6 months postoperatively, and 2(9.5%) eyes presented at 9 months postoperatively. Conclusion: Retinal re-detachment is a common finding after silicone oilremoval, which, in our study more than half of re-detachment occurred in the firstmonth of oil removal.
