Mortality Due to Road Traffic Accidents in Peshawar.

Objective: To find out the frequency of deaths due to road traffic accidents in Peshawar. Study design: Autopsy based descriptive study. Place: This study was conducted in the department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology of Khyber Medical College, Peshawar. Duration of study: Autopsies conducted from 1st January 2013 to 23rd May 2013. (Total 400 cases). Methodology: Data collected from the autopsy record of total autopsies done in the department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Khyber Medical College, Peshawar from January 2013 to May 2013. It included all cases of unnatural deaths referred for autopsy from the rural as well as urban areas of police stations of Peshawar district. Results: Out of total 400 autopsy cases 39 deaths (10%) were due to road traffic accidents. Most victims were of age 20 to 29 years (40%), male to female ratio was 4 to 1 and urban to rural areas ratio was 1 to 2. Conclusion: Traffic accidents are the main cause of about 10% of deaths as autopsied. In fact the incidence could be higher. Precious lives can be saved through strict enforcement of law. Moreover, it is important to create awareness of honesty and importance of duty in drivers through religious injunctions and by legislative cover.
