Iatrogenic Injuries in Periphery Referred to Teaching Hospital: Food For Thought.

A prospective study was conducted at the Department of Surgery at Bahawal Victoria Hospital Bahawalpur from January 1996 to June 1999. Total of 40 Patients referred to this Hospital from periphery after different iatrogenic complications are included in this study. Out of 40 Patients, 10 were of biliary system, 13 were of Gut injuries, 9 of urinary system, and 3 of gynecological complications, 5 were of others systems like parotid tumor, Haemangioma etc. The mortality seen in these cases was 30% as compared to 0.5% expiry rate of the ward. The number of referred patients have steadily increased for the last 4 years i.e., only 6 in 1996 to 14 in first half of 1999. The most of patients were operated by in-experienced doctors, who usually have not adequate surgical experience.
