Crohn`s Disease: Clinical presentation and outcome.

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the clinical presentation and outcome of cases of Cohn`s disease reporting to the surgical department with complications needing surgical intervention. Design: A retrospective analysis of the cases reporting during a period of six years from Aug 1995 to Aug. 2001. Place and period of study: The study was carried out at PNS-SHIFA Karachi. Subjects and method. A total of twenty patients with complicated disease requiring surgery (emergency or elective) were studied. Results: Seventy percent cases presented in acute manner and required an early surgical intervention. Remaining thirty percent had chronic symptoms and under went elective surgery. Diagnosis was primarily made on the basis of findings at the time of operation supported by histopathological examination. The commonest surgical procedure carried out was strictureplasty [70%]. Twenty five percent cases had early post operative complications. There was no fatality. Conclusions: Crohn`s disease is not so uncommon in Pakistan and cases do report with complications to general surgical departments. A high index of suspicion is stressed upon.
