Pak J Gastroenterol Jan ;17(1):12-6.

In this prospective, observational study conducted at DHQ Teaching Hospital, Rawalpindi, from June 2000 to June 2002, two hundred and ninety nine patients with established compensated cirrhosis diagnosed on basis of clinical evaluation, ultrasound, and liver biopsy etc were included. Upper GI endoscopies were done using standard protocols. Patient characteristics (i.e., age, sex, address), endoscopic findings/diagnosis were noted in each case. Anti HCV antibodies and HBsAg were sought in each subject. This data was converted into variables, which were analyzed using statistical program, SPSS version 8. 77.3% were female, and 22.7% male patients. Mean patient age was 54.1 ± 13.8 years. Varices were observed in majority of patients i.e., 84.6% (n=253). Congestive gastropathy was observed in 11% (n=33) patients. Gastric ulcer and normal findings were noted in 0.2% (n=2), and 14.7% (n=44) patients respectively. HBsAg, and Anti HCV antibodies were positive in 13.4% (n=40), and 34.1% (n=102) patients. It is concluded that varices are very common in patients with clinically compensated cirrhosis.
