Assessment of Hearing Loss after Childhood Meningitis.

Objectives: To find out the frequency of hearing loss in children after meningitis. Setting: Department of Pediatric Medicine, Children Hospital and Institute of Child Health, Lahore Methods: Patients diagnosed as pyogenic meningitis on basis of clinical features and positive CSF were included. Audiology was conducted under supervision of a researcher. Results: One hundred admitted cases of meningitis were enrolled in the study. Overall 34 cases were found to have hearing impairment at first assessment and on retesting, 15 cases showed persistent impairment at six weeks. Significant factors for hearing loss identified were persistent fever before admission, persistent convulsions and CSF hypoglycorrachia <20mg/dl. Conclusion: Specific therapy can be implemented early to prevent progression of speech and developmental delay.
