Pak Paed J Jan ;26(4):173-76.

Deafness in infants is a serious concern because it interferes with the development of language - that which sets humans apart from all other living things. The longer a child`s deafness goes undetected, the worse the outcomes. Language remediation must begin as early as possible, because language develops rapidly in the first few months of life. Many of the negative results of deafness in babies can be prevented or substantially lessened. Many research studies have demonstrated that early intervention with hearing impaired children results in improved language development, increased academic success and increased life time earnings. This is a review article.
