Effects of Exergaming of Fall Risk Reduction and Mobility Improvement in Elderly: a Pre-Post Quasi Interventional Study.
Int J Rehab Sci Jan ;06(01):42.

Background: Aging process significantly deteriorates balance and mobility in elderly; however such deterioration is preventable with balance training. Adherence to such training programs is poor but exer-gaming provides a promising approach in improving balance, mobility and reducing fall risk among elderly. Objectives: To determine the effects of Kinect® based exergaming regime on fall risk and mobility of elderly individuals. Material & Methods: Pre-post quasi interventional study was conducted from July-October 2016 on 09 individuals selected via non probability convenient sampling. Subjects were selected based on inclusion criteria of having age more than 60 years of either gender, able to stand for 10 seconds with eyes open and having no major co-morbid conditions. Intervention was provided 3 times a week for 6 weeks with each session lasting for 30-45 minutes. Balance intervention was provided using Xbox Kinect adventures games. Subjects were assessed at baseline and after every 2 weeks using Berg balance scale, timed up and go test, and Biodex stability index. Repeated measure ANOVA was used with 95% confidence interval and level of significance was considered as 0.05. Data was analyzed using IBM® SPSS® v.20.0. Results: Mean age was computed as 64.33 ± 7.92 and BMI of 27.65 ± 4.16 kg/m2 .9 participants were recruited for this study, of which 33.3% (n=03) were males and 66.7% (n=06) were females. Significant improvement was observed on Berg balance score, Timed up and Go test and Biodex stability index as reported by P value of <0.001. Conclusion: Kinect® based exergaming regime provide a promising solution for improving balance and mobility in elderly population hence reducing fall risk.
