Impact of Dysphonia on Quality of Life in a Treatment Seeking Population.

Background: Dysphonia refers to dysfunction in ability to produce voice properly according to age, gender &cultural background. There are several causes of dysphonia, it can be either functional where no laryngeal pathology is present or organic may be due to some laryngeal trauama.it highly effects individual social and academic performance. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of dysphonia on quality of life in a treatment-seeking population Method:This was an observational descriptive study. Data was collected through self-designed questionnaire from forty three (43) dysphonic patients, seventeen (17) men twenty six (26) women, from different clinical settings to evaluate the impact of dysphonia on quality of life in a treatment-seeking population. Results: The result illustrated marked effect on social impact of life as 28(65.1%) subjects responded that their dysphonia had influenced on social life. Impact on educational life was (46.5%) as 20 out of 43 responded that dysphonia affected their educational aspect of life. Out of 43, 21(48.8%) respondents responded that dysphonia had influenced on their occupational life. In emotional aspect of life 22(46.5%) responded that dysphonia had influenced their QOL. Only 5(11.6%) respondent responded that dysphonia influenced their family life. Conclusion: The study shows that rate of dysphonia was higher in females as the predominance of females in studied group. Dysphonia decreased the QOL of dysphonic subjects? especially in social and emotional aspect and professional use of voice presented worse quality of life.
