Reflection of Physiotherapy Leaders about Their Leadership Effectiveness.

Background: Effective leadership requires the manager to be vigilant and be able to address the conflicting issues. In the health care environment four leadership frames have been identified which includes structural, human resource, political and symbolic. Leadership in physical therapy is essential so that the profession can endure the changing circumstances. The purpose of the study is to describe the perception and to evaluate the leadership orientation of physical therapist leaders. This is the first survey about the leadership frames in physical therapy profession in Pakistan. Methods: A cross-sectional study will be conducted on 27 physiotherapist leaders including head of departments of private and public setups in Lahore. The sampling technique used will be non.probability purposive sampling. The duration of the study will be 4 months. Leadership qualities will be assessed using the Bolman and Deal Leadership orientation Index. This tool includes four leadership frames; structural, human resource, political and symbolic. Respondents will be asked to rate their leadership traits on 4 point graded scale (4= best describes you, 1= least describes you). Qualitative variables will be expressed as percentages. Results: The symbolic frame found to be the most used frame as indicated by the respondents with 30.8%. The second most frequent frame utilized after the symbolic was human resource frame with 27.7%. After these two frames structural frame was utilized by 22.3% respondents. The minimum utilized frame came out to be political frame with the value of only 19.0%. Conclusion: The most utilized frame by physiotherapy managers in Lahore was symbolic frame representing that they believe in vision, imagination and creativity as an effective leadership trait. The political frame was the least used frame by the respondents.
