Int J Rehab Sci Jan ;06(01):36.

Background: Stroke is one of the major causes of longstanding debility among developing countries, known to be third most common cause of mortality. Chronic hemiplegic patients, characterized as more than 6 months post-stroke, are often unable to perform activities of daily living with both hands. Most of the stroke patients achieve an independent gait after recovery, but the functioning of upper limb is rarely attained. Objective: Determine the effects of Bimanual Training in patients with chronic stroke. Methods: This quasi experimental study was conducted on a sample of 50 patients. Patients with a history of stroke over one year and persistent upper limb disability were enrolled in the study. Both males and females aged between 50 to 70 years were included. The data was recruited from Lahore General Hospital and sampling strategy used was non probability convenience sampling. The study duration was 6 months from April 2016 to October 2016. Outcomes were measured pre and post intervention through ABILHAND questionnaire. Percentages were used to represent qualitative variables. Pre and Post intervention scores were compared using Wilcoxon signed rank test. The p value below 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Bimanual training had significant effect on manual abilities in patients with chronic stroke. The P value came out to be 0.000 which was below 0.05. Conclusion: Bimanual training appears to have positive effect on manual abilities in chronic stroke patients
