AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy acids) in Dermatology.
J Pak Assoc Derma Jan ;12(2):95-100.

Alpha hydroxy acids have been used for centuries. Long before the chemical structure, or even the existence, of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) were known, they were unknowingly being used as an ingredient for improving the skin. Egyptian women took bath in sour milk in order to improve their skin. French women washed their faces with old wine for the same reason. Old fashioned facial masks made from fruit; honey or yogurt were also unknowingly taking advantage of AHAs as their active ingredients. Recently these have been rediscovered as an effective topical therapy in treatment of various pigmentary imperfections and to improve the appearance of photcaged skin. This is a review article.
