Causes of Splenomegaly in Adult local population presenting at tertiary care centre in Lahore.

We conducted a prospective study to find out the causes of splenomegaly in local Pakistani population admitted in, tertiary care centre at Lahore i.e. Mayo Hospital. One hundred patients above 13 years of age having splenomegaly confirmed on ultrasonography were included in the study from 15th January to 30th June 2000. Causes of splenomegaly were established by thorough investigations. Fifty three patients were male and 47 female, having mean age of 45 years (range 14-80). Cirrhosis of liver was the commonest cause (69%). Five percent of each having chronic myeloid leukemia and infective endocarditis, 4% having Hodgkin`s lymphoma and 3% of each were having CCF, acute myeloid leukemia, other diseases were causing 1% each. Fourteen patients were having moderate splenomegaly, 8 were having massive splenomegaly and 78% cases had mild splenomegaly.
