Ophthalmol Update Jan ;16(4):927-30.

Objectives: To compare the post-operative mean pain scores after using 0.2% GTN ointment and Placebo in patients with openhemorrhoidectomy. Material and Methods: This randomized control study was conducted in Surgical A unit of Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar, Pakistan from January 2016 to December 2016. Using non probability sampling technique, 92 patients with grade III and grade IV hemorrhoids were randomly selected through OPD and divided into two groups. Group A received 0.2% topical GTN and Group B received placebo (liquid paraffin) post-operatively after hemorrhoidectomy. The patients were followed up for mean pain scores at 7 post-operative day and data was collected. Results: A total of 92 patientswere divided in two equal groups. Male to female ratio was 1.49:1. The average age of the patients was38.97 years +13.23SD. Pain-wise distribution showed that placebo group have an average pain of 6.75+1.395SD while in GTN group it was 5.58+2.45SD with p-value = 0.032. Conclusion: Topical 0.2% GTN ointment was more effective than placebo in post- hemorrhoidectomy pain management.
