Pak Postgrad Med J Jan ;13(4):146-51.

OBJECTIVE OF STUDY: To observe electrophoretic pattern of serum proteins in Non – Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) patients. STUDY DESIGN: A cross sectional comparative descriptive prospective study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty two freshly diagnosed patients of NHL were randomly selected from different hospitals of Lahore. Twenty healthy subjects matched for age and sex were included in the study as controls. The sera of all the subjects were subjected for serum protein electrophoresis on cellulose acetate membrane. Besides serum total protein by Biuret method and serum albumin by dye binding method were estimated on both patients and control subjects. RESULTS: Total serum protein and serum albumin were highly significantly lower in NHL patients as compared to control subjects while electrophoretic fractions of albumin, alpha 1 and beta globulins were highly significantly lower and that of alpha 2 and gamma globulins were highly significantly raised as compared with that of control subjects. CONCLUSION: Hypoalbuminemia and polyclonal gammopthy in NHL patients indicated that immunity is impaired in NHL patients.
