Ophthalmol Update Jan ;15(4):357-9.

Purpose: To assess the efficacy of probing and silicon tube intubation in adult patients with acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Study Design: Prospective descriptive study Sampling: Purposive Place and duration of study: Pakistan ordinance factory teaching hospital from February 2016 to February 2017. Materials and methods: 39 eyes of 39 patients of both sexes having severe epiphora due to acquired NLD obstruction, having no nasal problems such as severe DNS, nasal allergies, nasal polyps etc., were treated with probing of nasolacrimal duct and silicon tube intubation. All 39 patients were followed at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year respectively. Silicon tubes were removed at 6 months after surgery. Success was defined as symptomatic relief of epiphora and patent nasolacrimal duct passage on syringing. The procedure was performed under general anesthesia (GA). Results: In the first post-op week of procedure, nearly all 39 patients had symptomatic relief. Six months after the procedure, the silicon tubes were removed. At 01 year, 25 patients out of 39 (64.10%) had symptomatic relief from epiphora. Syringing was successfully carried out in all 25 patients. Conclusions: Probing of nasolacrimal duct and silicon tube intubation is a simple method for treatment of obstructed nasolacrimal duct in adults. The procedure can prevent from more invasive surgery like dacryocystorhinostomy in selected cases.
