Prevalence of Back Pain amongst General Surgeons at Tertiary Care Hospitals of Peshawar: (A cross sectional study).

Objective: To determine the prevalence of back pain among general surgeons at tertiary care hospitals of Peshawar. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted at tertiary care hospital of Peshawar Khyber PukhtunKhwa (KPK). A total of 280 questionnaires were distributed among the study participants. Only those surgeons were recruited who were in practice for last 6 months and performing 1-5 surgeries per week. 10 questionnaires were rejected due to incomplete information. The standard questionnaire was taken with little modification according to this study. Results: The mean age of participant in years was 38� 3.12, the mean of 3 surgeries were performing by them per week and it was reported to be 2 years� 2.2 since they started work in surgical field with prevalence of 53%. Participants reported long standing and prolonged walking as most painful positions while their pain was of mild to moderate intensity. Conclusion: A high prevalence of back pain was found amongst general surgeons without any pathology. Painful back was a leading cause to limit their work after 1 hour and was limiting their daily life activities. The finding of this study has important clinical implication for prevention and early management of back pain among surgeons.
