Study of Malarial Incidence in Children in THQ Hospital, Katlang.

Objective: To look for malaria parasite and its specie in children coming to children OPD who were clinically suspected to be suffering from malaria. Back ground: Malaria is one of the most killer disease in the world. It kills over a Million each year. Majority of these deaths are in children. Study Design: Descriptive. Material and Method: This is a hospital based study conducted at THQ Hospital Katlang Mardan from January 2010 to December 2012. Data regarding age, sex, malarial parasites and their species was collected. Data was analyzed and results were presented as frequency tables, and charts. Results: Patients were clinically suspected to be suffering from malaria and they were picked up from OPD randomly, they were advised routine tests and blood smears for malaria parasite and its specie. Malarial parasites were seen in n=180 (20%) cases. Plasmodium vivax was seen in majority cases n=164 (91.1%) cases. Plasmodium Falciparum was seen in n=14(7.7%) cases. Two cases n=2(1.1%) were mixed infections. There was no case of plasmodium malariae or ovale. All the patient were treated as outpatients and all improved on treatment Conclusion: Nine hundreds patients n=900 were clinically suspected to be suffering from malaria. Out of n=900 cases n=180 (20%) cases were malarial parasite positive. Plasmodium vivax was the predominant specie in this study.
