Pak Armed Forces Med J Jan ;52(2):203-7.

Malaria can be considered as an extremely important cause of mortality in different parts of the world including Pakistan. Various age groups are affected but children below the age of five and pregnant women are at high risk. The epidemiological data from different regions of Pakistan is insufficient to exactly evaluate the incidence of various types of malaria. A study was carried out at combined military hospital Zhob to find out the prevalence of various types of malaria in Zhob, its seasonal variation, and density of malarial parasite in the peripheral blood of infected individuals. Cases of fever during the years 2000 and 2001, referred to the Department of Pathology for investigation of malarial parasite in peripheral blood were included. Out of 5650 patients 665 were positive. Cases were seen throughout the year with maximum cases of falciparum malaria during the months of July to November. The density of parasite per ul of blood varied from 1200 to more than 200,000. Density of malarial parasite was variable, even cases with very high parasite index responded well to routine treatment.
