Efficacy of Dexamethasone – Ephedrine Combination in Prevention of Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.

Aim: To evaluate efficacy of dexamethasone and ephedrine combination in prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Study design: Descriptive case series Study setting: Department of Anesthesia & ICU, Jinnah Hospital Lahore Duration of study: Ten months from January 2010 to October 2010 Sampling: Non probability purposive sampling. Methodology: One hundred and eighty adult patients of ASA physical status I undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy were enrolled in this study. Drugs were given I/V after induction of G/A with ETT. The effects of drugs were assessed. Results: Mean age and weight of patients was 40.03±11.07and 69.59±11.68 respectively. The incidence of nausea & vomiting was significantly less i.e., 8.3% and 6.7% respectively. Conclusion: Combination of dexamethasone and ephedrine is effective in prevention of PONV in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
