Iron status of Anemic school children.
Pak Postgrad Med J Jan ;14(1):14-7.

This prospective study was carried out on one hundred and sixty eight primary school children of Lahore, between the ages of six and twelve years, to evaluate their iron status . These school children had anaemia as their haemoglobin levels were below 11 g/dl. These anaemic students who had been screened from a larger group were studied in detail. Their clinical manifestations , complete blood counts, red blood cell indices and morphology, serum iron, total iron binding capacity, percentage transferrin saturation and serum ferritin levels were evaluated to ascertain their iron status . The analysis of these results reveal that iron deficiency was the cause of anaemia in 98 (58.3%) of these anaemic children . In the remaining 70 (41.7%) children the factors leading to anaemia were other than iron deficiency. It, therefore, was concluded that iron deficiency was the commonest cause of anaemia in this study.
